Frequently asked questions

How does Precip measure rain without a physical gauge?

We combine data from 180+ doppler radar stations, satellite imagery, and a quality-controlled network of ground reporting stations. These inputs feed into proprietary models that produce accurate precipitation estimates at 1km resolution — no hardware required on your end.

What areas does Precip cover?

Precip currently covers the contiguous United States (all 48 states) plus significant parts of Canada and northern Mexico. We're actively working on expanding coverage. See our data availability page for more details.

How accurate is the data compared to a rain gauge?

Our data is observation-based, not forecast-based, so it reflects what actually happened. Users regularly report that Precip readings closely match their physical rain gauges. The 1km resolution means we capture hyperlocal variation that coarser weather models miss. See our how it works page for more details.

How many locations can I track for free?

The free plan includes two saved locations with partial access to rainfall history, forecasts, and alerts. Upgrade to track more locations, unlock deeper historical data, and access premium layers.

How do I cancel or manage my subscription?

Subscriptions are managed through the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android). Open your device's store app, go to your subscriptions, and you can cancel or change your plan from there. Changes take effect at the end of your current billing cycle.

Can I use Precip data in my business or application?

Yes, Precip for business supports orgazations with more complex workflows and scalability needs. The Precip API provides programmatic access to all of our precipitation, snow, soil moisture, and soil temperature data. Visit our API documentation or schedule a demo to learn more.

What types of precipitation data do you provide?

Precip tracks rainfall accumulation, snowfall totals, snow depth, soil moisture, soil temperature, and muddiness conditions. We also provide ensemble-powered rain and snow forecasts and historical data going back years.
