NOAA rain gauges
Each station's gauge measures the rain that fell in each hour. This check doesn't depend on radar.
Nowcast benchmark
Precip's next-hour rain forecast compared with Apple Weather, Google Weather, Tomorrow.io, and Rainbow.ai at NOAA weather stations across the U.S., using each provider's forecasts exactly as they were issued.
Best score in 37 of 38 tests
Headline results
Medium to heavy rain is the rain that disrupts plans, and it's the hardest to forecast. Precip is substantially better here.
The accuracy score is correct rain calls ÷ (correct calls + missed rain + false alarms) when the rain was over 8mm/hour. A score of 1 is perfect.
Methods
Most weather apps don't publish their past forecasts, so the only fair test is to record them as they happen.
Every hour, each provider's next-hour forecast is fetched from its public API at NOAA weather stations across the U.S.
Forecasts are saved exactly as issued, including Precip's, so nothing is rerun or adjusted after the fact.
Every provider is scored on the same hours and places, against the rain that fell at NOAA weather stations across the U.S.
Each station's gauge measures the rain that fell in each hour. This check doesn't depend on radar.
NOAA's real-time radar estimate of the rain at each station, every five minutes through the hour.
NOAA's official hourly radar estimate after it has been corrected with rain gauges.
How often a forecast called rain correctly, with missed rain and false alarms counted against it: correct calls ÷ (correct calls + missed rain + false alarms). 1 is perfect.

Open models
16 storms from 2024, a year Precip's model never trained on. This test is fixed and doesn't update.
Open research models can be rerun on past weather, which commercial apps can't. Precip, three pySTEPS models and NVIDIA's StormScope were run on the same storms and checked against NOAA radar across a 636 × 636 mile map.
Common questions
Checked against 110 NOAA climate reference rain gauges and NOAA radar across the U.S., Precip had the best score in 37 of 38 tests against Apple Weather, Google Weather, Tomorrow.io, and Rainbow.ai, and ranked #1 at every 5-minute step of the hour ahead.
Across 49,991 station-hours at 110 NOAA rain gauges and 635,743 five-minute radar checks, Precip won all 19 of 19 tests against Apple Weather and Google Weather. For medium to heavy rain (over 0.31 in/hr or 8 mm/hr), Precip's accuracy score is 121% higher than Apple Weather and 92% higher than Google Weather, with 37% lower average error than Apple and 23% lower error than Google.
In the same 49,991 station-hours at NOAA rain gauges, Apple Weather had 3,841 false alarms (calling rain when none fell), more than three times as many as Precip (1,154). Google Weather had the opposite problem, missing 1,235 rain events, 78% more missed storms than Precip (692).
Across 325 matched hours at 101 to 105 NOAA stations, Precip won 18 of 19 tests against Tomorrow.io and Rainbow.ai. On medium to heavy rain (over 8 mm/hr) at NOAA rain gauges, Precip's accuracy score is 111% higher than Tomorrow.io and 30% higher than Rainbow.ai, with 27% lower average error than Tomorrow.io and 15% lower error than Rainbow.ai.
On 16 storms from 2024 across a 636 × 636 mile NOAA radar domain (96 million 5-minute checks), Precip beat NVIDIA's StormScope and three pySTEPS models on every metric, scoring 39% higher on hourly heavy rain and 23% lower on 5-minute average error than the next-best model.
In our 10-day forecast benchmark across about 2,200 U.S. airport weather stations, Precip won 72 of 75 tests against ECMWF IFS HRES and Google WeatherNext 3 for temperature, humidity, wind, rain, and the chance of rain. See the 10-day forecast benchmark →
